The Kansas Bioscience Authority, the driving force behind bringing the NBAF to Manhattan, announced this week that they will be helping two key animal health companies increase their investments in protecting our nation’s food supply and the Kansas economy. Cargill Meat Solutions in Wichita and the Arthropod-Borne Animal Disease Research Unit were each recipients of grants.

The crucial research these companies will be doing into animal health and food safety will be assisted by the research taking place at the NBAF. Additionally, this research is vital for protecting our nation’s food supply and helping to find cures for animal diseases.

Check out some highlights of the news coverage:

The Wichita Business Journal
“The Kansas Bioscience Authority has awarded a $750,000 grant to Cargill Meat Solutions to help with the construction of a new research facility in Wichita.

“The grant will be paid out over five years to support the construction of “a state-of-the-art technology and innovation center focused on food safety and the development of new food products,” the KBA said in a news release. The KBA said the project would cost $15 million, retain 51 jobs and result in the hiring of an estimated 10 new employees…”

The Lawrence Journal World
“The KBA also awarded $498,900 to the Arthropod-Borne Animal Disease Research Unit to develop diagnostic tests that could prevent the spread of Rift Valley Fever virus, one of the top biological threats to the country’s food supply. The project would use a high-level biosecurity lab at Kansas State’s Biosecurity Research Institute.”

NBAF in Kansas

Kansas State University has been selected as the future home of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) — once again highlighting the state’s deep agricultural heritage, bioscience expertise, research infrastructure, world-class animal health industry, and strong public support.

The $650 million research facility will provide the country with an urgently needed, state-of-the-art lab to protect the food supply and agriculture economy. Kansas is exceptionally well suited to accelerate the achievement of this mission.
